On the 6th of June I had the chance to meet Markus Zusak at the Waterstones in Brighton. I found this event by accident. I went to the Waterstones early in the morning and saw a guy taking a picture of a book, so I decided to find the Instagram or twitter pages. I accidentally stumbled across the Waterstones Brighton instagram. There I saw that Markus Susan was coming on the 6th of June. I was so happy that I decided to fly back home on the 9th instead of on the 5th.
So I bought my ticket for the signing and there we went. I arrived way too early at the venue, but I got a spot on the front row. At this moment I realized that I left my copy of the book thief at my parents so there was no way he would be able to sign one of my favourite books of all time. But luckily, I brought my book review notebook. I recently read the book thief, so I could show Markus my review of the book.
The talk itself really interested me, he talked at lot about the writing proces and how to write down what you want. He also told a very funny story about his youth. But this story also carried a message about story telling and writing. I will not tell you what this is, you will have to ask him himself.:)
I got the chance to get my book signed, which was amazing. I also had a notebook where I keep all my reviews in. I read the book thief a couple of weeks before meeting Markus, so I was able to let him sign my review. He said he was honored to see that I gave the book 5 out of 5 stars.
Because I was one of the last people in the signing line I had some time to take a picture, which was awesome! The picture can be found on my instagram http://www.instagram.com/addiereadthis
In conclusion, it was an amazing experience and it made me realize more that the Dutch bookshops really need to step their game up. They never have any actors over or they can only be found in Amsterdam, which is 2 hours away for me. Guess I have to start saving some money to travel to London more times!
